This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.
***Sunday Update Complete***
Welcome to the Weekly Value Meter Rankings. This is a guide to help you decide who to start and sit in a given week. It's is not a season-long ranking nor a draft guide, and it's also not really intended as a free agent guide. While I appreciate that you want my opinion on pickups, every league is different, and your decision on whether to add/drop a particular player might also be dictated by other factors than who is rated higher in a given week.
Here are my operating assumptions for the rankings:
- The RB/WR/TE position rankings are for PPR leagues.
- The Flex rankings are for Standard leagues.
- 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards.
- 1 point per 20 passing yards.
- 4 points per passing touchdowns.
These are the rankings I use when I make my start/sit decisions. Please consult the rankings first before asking "Should I start Patrick Mahomes or Eli Manning?"
These are my particular rankings. If you want a second opinion elsewhere on the site, you can see our Weekly Projections.
Starting after Week 1, the rankings for the subsequent week will first post on Tuesday nights, roughly around 10:00 pm ET. I will then do a set of updates before kickoff on Thursday, and again before kickoff on Sunday morning.
I welcome debate on the rankings in the comments. Please keep it friendly.
Quarterbacks
1. | Patrick Mahomes KC vs. BAL |
2. | Dak Prescott DAL vs. MIA |
3. | Deshaun |

Quarterbacks
1. | Patrick Mahomes KC vs. BAL |
2. | Dak Prescott DAL vs. MIA |
3. | Deshaun Watson HOU at LAC |
4. | *Carson Wentz PHI vs. DET Note: Briefly left with sore ribs, and had his receiving corps decimated by injury. In that context, 231 passing yards isn't that bad, and of course the rushing touchdown was nice. |
5. | Lamar Jackson BAL at KC |
6. | Philip Rivers LAC vs. HOU |
7. | *Tom Brady NE vs. NYJ Note: (Calf) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Removed from the injury report, but will be without Antonio Brown forever, and James White this week.*** |
8. | Josh Allen BUF vs. CIN |
9. | Aaron Rodgers GB vs. DEN |
10. | *Jameis Winston TB vs. NYG Note: Landed on the injury report with a foot issue despite a full practice Wednesday. |
11. | Jimmy Garoppolo SF vs. PIT |
12. | Russell Wilson SEA vs. NO |
13. | Jared Goff LA at CLE |
14. | *Kyler Murray ARZ vs. CAR Note: Threw for 349 yards but surprisingly isn't running. |
15. | Baker Mayfield CLE vs. LAR |
16. | Jacoby Brissett IND vs. ATL |
17. | Matt Ryan ATL at IND Note: Good fantasy day against the Eagles, but three interceptions were worrisome. |
18. | Andy Dalton CIN at BUF |
19. | Mitchell Trubisky CHI at WAS |
20. | Matthew Stafford DET at PHI |
21. | *Kirk Cousins MIN vs. OAK Note: Threw a horrible fourth-quarter interception in the end zone. |
22. | Gardner Minshew JAC vs. TEN |
23. | *Marcus Mariota TEN at JAX Note: Dealing a quad issue and didn't practice Monday - a reminder that the Titans play on Thursday. Removed from the injured list on Wednesday. ***Just got sacked again as I was typing this.*** |
24. | *Mason Rudolph PIT at SF Note: Starting in place of the injured Ben Roethlisberger, who is out for the season. He averaged 5.9 yards per attempt in the loss to the Seahawks, and the interception throw was actually the result of a Donte Moncrief drop. Devlin Hodges will be the backup. |
25. | *Daniel Jones NYG at TB Note: Getting the start over Eli Manning. |
26. | Joe Flacco DEN at GB |
27. | *Derek Carr OAK at MIN Note: The struggle was really, and exacerbated by nagging injuries to Josh Jacobs and Tyrell Williams in the second half. |
28. | *Kyle Allen CAR at ARI Note: Allen would be the starter if Cam Newton can't go on Sunday, though he split first-team snaps will rookie Will Grier on Wednesday. |
29. | Case Keenum WAS vs. CHI |
30. | *Luke Falk NYJ at NE Note: Starting this week after taking over for Trevor Siemian on Monday night. |
31. | *Teddy Bridgewater NO at SEA Note: Starting for the injured Drew Brees but could be on a short leash after putting up poor numbers against the Rams last week. May share reps with Taysom Hill this week. ***'Likely' to be the starter, with Taysom Hill 'sprinkled in' - according to Diana Russini of ESPN.com's anonymous source. In other words, nothing new.*** |
32. | *Josh Rosen MIA at DAL Note: Once again saw relief work in the fourth quarter. Got sacked multiple times, threw a pick to end the game. ***Officially named the starter.*** |
33. | *Cam Newton CAR at ARI Note: Newton aggravated his previously sprained left foot in the Thursday night loss to the Bucs, and was in a walking boot on Tuesday. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. His status will be reviewed on Friday, but I don't expect him to play. ***Officially ruled out for this week, could return to practice on Wednesday.*** |
34. | *Taysom Hill NO at SEA Note: Already gets on the field in a hybrid role, but could ultimately supplant Teddy Bridgewater if he struggles. May split reps with Bridgewater. |
35. | *Ryan Fitzpatrick MIA at DAL Note: Pulled again in the fourth quarter - really doesn't have much of a chance. Still, it's a matter of time before Josh Rosen gets a chance to start. Splitting snaps with Rosen in practice. |
36. | *Eli Manning NYG at TB Note: Benched for Daniel Jones. |
37. | *Drew Brees NO at SEA Note: Has ligament damage in his right thumb and is projected to be out 6-8 weeks, though he's seeking a second opinion on his thumb. Not going on the IR, which as Liss pointed out on the XM show, is the obvious decision. If there's any chance he's back in six weeks, you have to preserve that option. |
38. | *Sam Darnold NYJ at NE Note: (Mono) Feeling better - but still out for Week 3. Luke Falk will start. Darnold has 'full confidence' that he will be back in Week 5 - the Jets coaching staff is being a little more cautious with that pronouncement. |
39. | *Ben Roethlisberger PIT at SF Note: (Elbow) Needs surgery, out for the season, placed on IR. |
40. | *Trevor Siemian NYJ at NE Note: (Ankle) Out for the season. |
Running Backs
1. | Ezekiel Elliott DAL vs. MIA |
2. | Saquon Barkley NYG at TB |
3. | Dalvin Cook MIN vs. OAK |
4. | Nick Chubb CLE vs. LAR |
5. | Christian McCaffrey CAR at ARI |
6. | *Derrick Henry TEN at JAX Note: Getting more targets in the passing game. |
7. | Alvin Kamara NO at SEA |
8. | Austin Ekeler LAC vs. HOU |
9. | Todd Gurley LA at CLE |
10. | Leonard Fournette JAC vs. TEN |
11. | Le'Veon Bell NYJ at NE |
12. | *Sony Michel NE vs. NYJ Note: ***James White ruled out to be with his wife as she gives birth today.*** |
13. | *Chris Carson SEA vs. NO Note: Two fumbles, one lost, in win over the Steelers. |
14. | *Aaron Jones GB vs. DEN Note: Coach Matt Lafleur said he'd like to 'even the touches out a bit' between Jones and Jamaal Williams after Jones had 23 carries last week. |
15. | *Mark Ingram BAL at KC Note: Had a scary looking injury against the Cardinals, writhing in pain on the sideline, only to return as if nothing happened later. |
16. | *David Johnson ARZ vs. CAR Note: Left wrist injury turned out to be minimal, but so has his rushing game. Full practice Wednesday. |
17. | David Montgomery CHI at WAS |
18. | *Kerryon Johnson DET at PHI Note: The Lions need to narrow their tree, and quickly at that. Too many touches were going to C.J. Anderson, Ty Johnson and even J.D. McKissic. Late note - Anderson has been released, though they added Paul Perkins. |
19. | *James Conner PIT at SF Note: Departed with a knee injury in the loss to Seattle, though the initial indication is that the injury is not serious. Though Conner said on Wednesday that he's good to go, he didn't practice. ***Full practice Thursday.*** |
20. | Matt Breida SF vs. PIT |
21. | Joe Mixon CIN at BUF |
22. | *Carlos Hyde HOU at LAC Note: Clearly the top back on the Texans right now. |
23. | *Frank Gore BUF vs. CIN Note: Singletary has missed practice Wednesday and Thursday. ***Singletary already ruled out.*** |
24. | *Devonta Freeman ATL at IND Note: Once again struggled in the running game. Had more snaps than Ito Smith this week - 41 to 25. |
25. | *Royce Freeman DEN at GB Note: Over 100 yards from scrimmage last week. |
26. | *Marlon Mack IND vs. ATL Note: Sat out Wednesday's walk-through and Thursday's practice with a calf issue. ***Practiced Friday and is expected to play, but will be tested in pregame warmups.*** |
27. | Peyton Barber TB vs. NYG |
28. | *Josh Jacobs OAK at MIN Note: Dealing with a groin injury, which explains why he saw only 30 snaps and zero targets, just as much as it was the game flow with the Raiders trailing. Also dealing with an illness that has made him lose 10 pounds. Limited in Wednesday's practice. ***Cleared the injury report on Friday after limited practices Wednesday and Thursday.*** |
29. | *Rex Burkhead NE vs. NYJ Note: ***More work this week with James White out.*** |
30. | *LeSean McCoy KC vs. BAL Note: An MRI on McCoy's ankle revealed no major injury. Expected to practice Thursday after doing less Wednesday than expected. ***Practiced Friday, but is listed as a game-time decision. Damien Williams has already been ruled out.*** |
31. | *Raheem Mostert SF vs. PIT Note: Monster game against the Bengals, who discovered that maybe they need good LB's after all. |
32. | *Justin Jackson LAC vs. HOU Note: Had a long touchdown run called back by a flimsy holding call at the very end. |
33. | Latavius Murray NO at SEA |
34. | Chris Thompson WAS vs. CHI |
35. | *Duke Johnson HOU at LAC Note: Targeted just once in the passing game - a perplexing lack of use given his skills and the draft pick given up to get him. |
36. | Miles Sanders PHI vs. DET |
37. | Tarik Cohen CHI at WAS |
38. | *Darwin Thompson KC vs. BAL Note: Saw four snaps last week but could be more active this week with both Williams and McCoy nursing injuries. Williams has sat out two practices so far. ***Williams has been declared out and McCoy is questionable.*** |
39. | *Phillip Lindsay DEN at GB Note: Outproduced by Freeman. He'll be ranked accordingly this week. |
40. | *Jaylen Samuels PIT at SF Note: Could get more snaps if James Conner's knee injury lingers. |
41. | *Jordan Wilkins IND vs. ATL Note: My preference as Marlon Mack's handcuff. ***Mack practiced Friday and is now expected to play, though the Colts will test him in pregame warmups.*** |
42. | Adrian Peterson WAS vs. CHI |
43. | *Malcolm Brown LA at CLE Note: Limited Wednesday with an ankle injury. ***Full practice Thursday.*** |
44. | *Kenyan Drake MIA at DAL Note: The Dolphins denied a report that they are peddling Drake. |
45. | Gus Edwards BAL at KC |
46. | Ito Smith ATL at IND |
47. | *Nyheim Hines IND vs. ATL Note: Just a passing down specialist, behind Jordan Wilkins in terms of who is the handcuff to Marlon Mack. Even though I'm lower on Hines than most, Mack's calf injury creates a window of opportunity. I still prefer Wilkins to Hines. |
48. | *Jamaal Williams GB vs. DEN Note: Workload could increase this week, per comments from coach Matt Lafleur. That said, he was limited Thursday with an ankle injury. ***Cleared from the injury list on Friday.*** |
49. | Jordan Howard PHI vs. DET |
50. | *T.J. Yeldon BUF vs. CIN Note: Could get more work with Singletary nursing a hamstring injury. |
51. | *Tony Pollard DAL vs. MIA Note: Had a touchdown wiped out by a holding penalty, and Zeke later vultured the touchdown back to himself. Minimal usage otherwise. |
52. | Giovani Bernard CIN at BUF |
53. | Alexander Mattison MIN vs. OAK |
54. | *Jeff Wilson SF vs. PIT Note: Goes from practice squad to Touchdown Vulture. He could remain in that role going forward. |
55. | *Dion Lewis TEN at JAX Note: No longer getting all the RB targets over Derrick Henry. |
56. | Ronald Jones TB vs. NYG |
57. | Justice Hill BAL at KC |
58. | Ty Montgomery NYJ at NE |
59. | Ty Johnson DET at PHI |
60. | Dare Ogunbowale TB vs. NYG |
61. | Benny Snell PIT at SF |
62. | *Kalen Ballage MIA at DAL Note: Comically bad. |
63. | Chase Edmonds ARZ vs. CAR |
64. | Mike Davis CHI at WAS |
65. | C.J. Prosise SEA vs. NO |
66. | *D'Ernest Johnson CLE vs. LAR Note: Had three catches for 42 yards as Chubb's backup - most of the production and snaps came in the second quarter, was in on the 2:00 drill. |
67. | DeAndre Washington OAK at MIN |
68. | Ryquell Armstead JAC vs. TEN |
69. | Jalen Richard OAK at MIN |
70. | *Darrell Henderson LA at CLE Note: Snapless in SoCal. My biggest whiff of the season so far. |
71. | *James White NE vs. NYJ Note: ***OUT THIS WEEK - wife giving birth.*** |

2. | Julio Jones ATL at IND |
3. | Odell Beckham CLE vs. LAR |
4. | *Davante Adams GB vs. DEN Note: ***Excused from practice Friday for personal reasons but is good to go for Sunday.*** |
5. | *Keenan Allen LAC vs. HOU Note: (Knee) Limited on Wednesday. ***Removed from the injury list.*** |
6. | Adam Thielen MIN vs. OAK |

9. | Kenny Golladay DET at PHI |
10. | *JuJu Smith-Schuster PIT at SF Note: Like Michael Thomas, JuJu will be hurt by the QB change. |
11. | Brandin Cooks LA at CLE |
12. | Tyler Boyd CIN at BUF |
13. | Amari Cooper DAL vs. MIA |
14. | Chris Godwin TB vs. NYG |
15. | Cooper Kupp LA at CLE |

24. | *Josh Gordon NE vs. NYJ Note: Only five targets last week - a bit of a victim of the game flow. ***Could get more targets with Antonio Brown gone.*** |
25. | *D.J. Moore CAR at ARI Note: Moving down because of Cam's injury - even if Cam plays, he'll be compromised a little. |
26. | John Brown BUF vs. CIN |
27. | *Terry McLaurin WAS vs. CHI Note: Scores again. |
28. | Larry Fitzgerald ARZ vs. CAR |
29. | Calvin Ridley ATL at IND |

31. | *Mecole Hardman KC vs. BAL Note: Scored his first career touchdown, and had another called back that would have been 75 yards. |
32. | *Marquise Brown BAL at KC Note: Completely different game than Week 1, but his owners have to be happy with the 13 targets. ***Maintenance rest on Friday.*** |
33. | *D.J. Chark JAC vs. TEN Note: (Ankle) Full practice Tuesday. Looked amazing against the Texans. |

37. | John Ross CIN at BUF |
38. | *Nelson Agholor PHI vs. DET Note: Caught eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, but all we'll remember is that drop! Still, injuries to Jeffery and Jackson will create a pretty opportunity for Agholor this week. |

29. | David Montgomery CHI at WAS |
30. | *Kerryon Johnson DET at PHI Note: The Lions need to narrow their tree, and quickly at that. Too many touches were going to C.J. Anderson, Ty Johnson and even J.D. McKissic. Late note - Anderson has been released, though they added Paul Perkins. |
31. | Tyler Boyd CIN at BUF |
32. | Amari Cooper DAL vs. MIA |
33. | George Kittle SF vs. PIT |
34. | *Julian Edelman NE vs. NYJ Note: ***Bumped up following the departure of Antonio Brown.*** |

37. | Chris Godwin TB vs. NYG |

39. | Cooper Kupp LA at CLE |
40. | *Carlos Hyde HOU at LAC Note: Clearly the top back on the Texans right now. |

42. | Joe Mixon CIN at BUF |
43. | Stefon Diggs MIN vs. OAK |
44. | *D.J. Moore CAR at ARI Note: Moving down because of Cam's injury - even if Cam plays, he'll be compromised a little. |

46. | Allen Robinson CHI at WAS |
47. | Tyler Lockett SEA vs. NO |

51. | Evan Engram NYG at TB |
52. | *Vance McDonald PIT at SF Note: (Back) Limited practice Wednesday. |
53. | *Royce Freeman DEN at GB Note: Over 100 yards from scrimmage last week. |
55. | Peyton Barber TB vs. NYG |
56. | Robert Woods LA at CLE |

58. | *Terry McLaurin WAS vs. CHI Note: Scores again. |

60. | *Dede Westbrook JAC vs. TEN Note: Upon some consideration, I'm moving Westbrook down a little. |

62. | Jamison Crowder NYJ at NE |

64. | Calvin Ridley ATL at IND |
65. | *D.J. Chark JAC vs. TEN Note: (Ankle) Full practice Tuesday. Looked amazing against the Texans. |
66. | *James Conner PIT at SF Note: Departed with a knee injury in the loss to Seattle, though the initial indication is that the injury is not serious. Though Conner said on Wednesday that he's good to go, he didn't practice. ***Full practice Thursday.*** |

68. | John Ross CIN at BUF |
69. | *Nelson Agholor PHI vs. DET Note: Caught eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, but all we'll remember is that drop! Still, injuries to Jeffery and Jackson will create a pretty opportunity for Agholor this week. |

71. | *Malcolm Brown LA at CLE Note: Limited Wednesday with an ankle injury. ***Full practice Thursday.*** |
72. | *Josh Gordon NE vs. NYJ Note: Only five targets last week - a bit of a victim of the game flow. ***Could get more targets with Antonio Brown gone.*** |
73. | *Duke Johnson HOU at LAC Note: Targeted just once in the passing game - a perplexing lack of use given his skills and the draft pick given up to get him. |
74. | Latavius Murray NO at SEA |
75. | Curtis Samuel CAR at ARI |
76. | Christian Kirk ARZ vs. CAR |
77. | Marvin Jones DET at PHI |

Defenses
1. | *Dallas Cowboys vs. MIA Note: The Dolphins look historically bad right now. Easy call to put them first. |
2. | *New England Patriots vs. NYJ Note: Facing Luke Falk in his first start. |
3. | *Chicago Bears at WAS Note: Surprisingly little fantasy production so far, and Case Keenum has done a good job of protecting the ball so far. I think that all changes this week. Eddie Jackson (shoulder) was limited on Thursday. |

14. | Los Angeles Rams at CLE |
15. | Los Angeles Chargers vs. HOU |
