This Week's Tampa Bay Championship

The PGA Tour started regularly visiting the Tampa Bay area in 2000. Since then, this event has used the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort at Palm Harbor, FL., north of Tampa.

While the Copperhead Course was consistently used, things have been shaky since the 2000 start. The first event, titled "Tampa Bay Classic," lasted only to 2002. The Chrysler Championship held forth from 2003 to 2006; PODS Championship for 2007 and 2008 followed by Transitions Championship from 2009 through last year. This year's presenting sponsor, Everbank Financial, stepped in just two weeks ago.

Despite the instability, the tournaments have attracted good fields prepping for the upcoming Masters. The par-71 Copperhead track is a tough course ranging with a high score of 266 (-18) by Vijay Singh in 2004, to a low of 280 (-4) by Sean O'Hair.

Fairways are tight and the rough is usually tall, making accurate driving essential. Birdies are rare - just like a U.S. Open layout. Bogey avoidance and GIR are vital. Scrambling will be important, plus players will have to be solid in putting. Check out your selections in the Strokes Gained-Putting data at PGA Tour.com/stats.
