This Week's WGC-Cadillac Championship

The TPC Blue Monster course, now owned by Donald Trump, will undergo a major renovation starting immediately after this year's play under the talented eye of golf architect Gil Hanse. Hanse is also handling the new course to be built for the upcoming summer Olympics in Brazil.

The first professional tournament here was the 1962 Doral, offering a $50,000 purse, which, at that time, was the most first-place PGA Tour money offered. Attracted to this new course that was offering the attractive payday were Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and a rookie named Jack Nicklaus, among others.

It might be said that this 1962 event was the start of the big-purse era that stirred the public whose attention grew from the competition (and TV) as the talented Palmer, Nicklaus, Player and Raymond Floyd went head-to-head while some of the elders - Hogan, Snead, et al. - were closing down their careers.

Billy Casper won the first Doral, 70-67-75-71, 5-under 283 and captured $9,000 (!!). Rookie Nicklaus finished third, collecting $3,000. Hogan finished fourth.

More recently, Tiger Woods won here in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Raymond Floyd and Ernie Els also have three wins. The course has proven to be the easiest on the Florida swing, but it regularly attracts a strong field of golfers prepping to play in the Masters. It has been said that without wind this course is defenseless.

Last Five Winners and Runners-Up

2012 - Justin Rose, 16-under 272; Bubba Watson, 273
2011 - Nick Watney, 16-under 272; Dustin Johnson, 274
2010 - Ernie Els, 18-under 270; Charl Schwartzel, 274
2009 - Phil Mickelson, 19-under 269; Nick Watney, 270
2008 - Geoff Ogilvy, 17-under 271; Jim Furyk, Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh, 272

2012 Low Rounds (Course record: 61, Stephen Ames in 2000)

Round 1: 6-under 66, Adam Scott, Jason Dufner
Round 2: 10-under 62, Bubba Watson
Round 3: 8-under 64, Brandon Grace
Round 4: 7-under 65, John Senden, Francesco Molinari

2012 Scoring Averages

Round 1: 72.0
Round 2: 69.9
Round 3: 70.1
Round 4: 71.8
Total: 71.14

Attributes and Conditions: Experienced players do well. Total driving (distance and accuracy), GIR, which is somewhat easy, excellent putting is necessary - in recent years the rough has been tall. Expect wind trouble (see last week's third round at Honda.) European players, Aussies and Texans play well in wind. Play aggressively - no cut.

Golfers above, without Snead, Hogan, Player, Palmer, Floyd and Nicklaus, are in the field of this week's Cadillac.
