DraftKings MLB: Wednesday Picks

DraftKings MLB: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

There's a lack of high-end pitching Wednesday night even with Rick Porcello getting his start moved up. The highest-priced arm by a wide margin (Patrick Corbin) isn't even a favorite. Because of that, I turned to some cheaper pitchers and loaded my bats against hurlers that have been allowing runs for fun.

For those interested, we've started an MLB DFS Slack channel for paid RotoWire subscribers. (There is a season-long one as well.) To join those channels, e-mail support@rotowire.com.

PITCHER

Julio Teheran, ATL at TB ($8,900): If you don't include the start in which Teheran had back tightness, he's reached at least 18.1 fantasy points in his last four outings. That's a great stat for a pitcher that doesn't cost much in a favorable spot. The Rays have slowly improved against righties, but they still aren't good and a low .124 ISO should help Teheran.

GPP Fade: Patrick Corbin, ARI at LAD ($13,300): Corbin has been the best pitcher to date on this slate, but I'm not sure he's worth the price in his third outing against the Dodgers. He carved them in his first start, but a week ago only had five strikeouts and finished with 18.5 fantasy points. On the road as an underdog, he's not worth the price.

Cheap GPP Consideration: Nick Pivetta, PHI vs. SF ($6,900): Teheran could've been my cheap pitcher, but I'll go even lower with Pivetta. The righty has been blasted in his last two starts and that's the main reason his price is where it is. However, the Giants have much less power than the Nationals and Braves and Pivetta has already shown he can have huge performances (16 Ks against Reds and Marlins). San Fran strikes out more than average against righties (23.5 K%) to go with little power (.132 ISO).

CATCHER

Mike Zunino, SEA at TOR ($3,300): Jaime Garcia hasn't had a quality start in a month and he's given up 15 runs in his last three outings to go with eight walks. Zunino hasn't hit southpaws well this season, but I think that could change soon, especially after he rocked them for a .297 ISO and .369 wOBA in 2017.

FIRST BASE

Ryon Healy, SEA at TOR ($3,800): Healy has also struggled against lefties, but his career .221 ISO and .362 wOBA show he can turn that around this season. Garcia isn't pitching much better than last year when he had a .333 wOBA and 4.59 xFIP against righties.

SECOND BASE

Jonathan Schoop, BAL vs. KC ($3,500): Schoop doesn't have good overall numbers, but that's because he hasn't seen more southpaws. He's 5-of-13 against them and roped them for a .293 ISO and .397 wOBA last season. Eric Skoglund has one good start, which isn't enough to be afraid of him. In his short career, he has a miserable .395 wOBA against 179 righties faced.

THIRD BASE

Mike Moustakas, KC at BAL ($4,100): There haven't been many bright spots for the Royals this season, but Moustakas has been one of them already with nine homers (and only nine Ks) against righties. That's coming off a 2017 in which he had 29 home runs and a .353 wOBA against righty hurlers. Andrew Cashner has already given up five homers to lefty bats and had a poor 5.96 xFIP against them last season.

SHORTSTOP

Manny Machado, BAL vs. KC ($4,900): If the Orioles had more relevant hitters, I'd use them, but Machado is the only other guy I'll recommend. He has five extra-base hits in 29 at-bats against lefties, which is a continuation from last year's .244 ISO and .345 wOBA. On the mound, Skoglund has given up at least four runs in four of his five starts and has a career 4.94 xFIP against righties.

OUTFIELD

J.D. Martinez, BOS at NYY ($5,000): Martinez may not have the upside of Mookie Betts ($5,800), but he's almost as consistent, especially against righties. Martinez has seven home runs against righties and roasted them for a .351 ISO and .402 wOBA last season. Masahiro Tanaka has pitched well this year, but he gave up six runs to the Red Sox less than a month ago and Martinez had one of the homers against him. In addition, Tanaka has worse numbers against righties with last year's .333 wOBA standing out.

Odubel Herrera, PHI vs. SF ($4,100): Herrera is killing righties this season with 11 XBH to go with a career .349 wOBA against them. That should be good enough against Chris Stratton, who has fallen back to earth in his last two starts, allowing nine runs and six walks. Stratton has had an issue against lefties in his short career with a 5.40 xFIP.

Teoscar Hernandez, TOR vs. SEA ($4,000): I went against Wade LeBlanc last outing and it kind of backfired, but he hasn't been a regular starter in the majors since 2013 for a reason. LeBlanc has a career .321 wOBA against righties and Hernandez can capitalize on that with his career .227 ISO and .327 wOBA. LeBlanc isn't a big strikeout guy (career 17.5 K% against righties), which happens to be Hernandez's biggest weakness with a 34.0 K% against southpaws.
