Closer Watch – A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (check out Dave Regan's Closer Grid with the link to the left).

Detroit – Jose Valverde's July struggles seem to have followed him into August. He was brought in to a tie game on Thursday and gave up a game winning two-run triple to Mark Kotsay. Valverde's job remains safe, but he's causing more damage than help to fantasy teams right now. In 12 July appearances, he was knocked around to the tune of an 8.25 ERA, 2.08 WHIP, and .275 BAA.

Minnesota – Matt Capps blew his fourth save of the season on Wednesday. It was his first blown save since joining the Twins at the trade deadline. The Twins were able to fight on and pull out the win in extra innings, taking the sting away a little. With Jon Rauch day-to-day with blisters on his hands, Capps' job couldn't be more secure at this time.

Bronson Arroyo vs. Chicago Cubs – Arroyo always seems to bring his best stuff against the Cubs. Against the Cubs' current lineup, Arroyo has limited them to a slash line of .220/.278/.377 through 261 batters faced. In 18 career starts against the Cubs, he has an 8-6 record with a 2.91 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and .227 BAA. Arroyo shutout the Cubs for six innings in his only start against them this season, and all of the data says he should have a great outing on Friday. Get him in your lineup.

Barry Zito vs. Atlanta Braves – Zito is squaring up against the Braves for the first time this season on Friday. Through 128 batters faced, Zito has limited their current lineup to an impressive slash line of .187/.315/.318. In four career starts against the Braves, he has a 3-1 record with a 2.42 ERA, 1.23 Whip, and .191 BAA. All the numbers are in favor of Zito coming out of Friday's game with a positive result. Make sure he's in your lineup to give you fantasy squad a positive return.

Recommended Pickup

Chris Johnson, 3B, HOU – Johnson is playing as well as any third baseman right now. Through 143 at-bats, he's hitting .350 with five home runs, 28 RBI, 20 runs scored, 11 doubles, and two triples. With so few quality bats at the hot corner this season, Johnson has been one of the few bright spots available in the mid-season free-agent pool. The Astros continue to bat him seventh, despite his .939 OPS. He won't give your team many runs, but, if you're in need of a power-potential third baseman on your fantasy squad, it'd be hard to argue that there's a better value out there than Johnson at this time.
