Expert NHL Betting Picks and Parlay Tips for Thursday Night

Winnipeg Jets at Philadelphia Flyers

The Jets (2-1-0) and the Flyers (1-1-1) meet at Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night with a puck drop at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

These teams split last season, with the road team picking up a win in each of the meetings. In fact, the road team is 5-1 in the past six meetings in this series since Jan. 22, 2023, and the Under has cashed in five straight meetings, and eight of the previous nine encounters dating back to Feb. 22, 2020, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Philadelphia has actually won four of the past five in the series, and six of the past nine installments, although Winnipeg picked up a 4-1 win as moderate favorites (-130) on March 6 in Philadelphia in the most recent meeting. However, the underdog is 4-1 in the past five in the series, so proceed with caution.

Connor Hellebuyck (1-1-0, 3.53 GAA, .899 SV%), the two-time Vezina Trophy winner, is expected to start for the Jets. He allowed a single goal on 32 shots in a 2-1 shootout loss (SOL) at home March 1 in his only start against the Flyers last season.

For the Flyers, Samuel Ersson (0-0-1, 3.69 GAA, .897 SV%) is the projected starter for the home side. He coughed up four goals on 39 shots in 4-3 OTL loss at Carolina on Oct. 11. Ersson allowed four goals on 27 shots in a home loss to the Jets on March 6 in Philly, his only start against the Presidents' Trophy winners last season.

Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers (now in Carolina), scored power-play goals in the first period of that 4-1 win, while Kyle Connor and Adam Lowry built a 4-0 lead before Matvei Michkov ruined the shutout with just 2:42 left in regulation.

Let's roll with the Jets on the moneyline here. They've posted 4.0 goals per game (GPG) in three games, while allowing 3.0 GPG. We'll go high on the total, too, despite the presence of Hellebuyck.

  • Jets ML (-135 at ESPN Bet Sportsbook)
  • Over 5.5 Goals (-118 at FanDuel Sportsbook)

Edmonton Oilers at New York Islanders

The Oilers (2-0-1) and the Islanders (0-3-0) lock horns at UBS Arena at 7:30 p.m. ET. Oldheads like me remember when these teams squared off in the early 1980s for all of the marbles. Edmonton is back on top, fighting for championships again. New York...not so much.

The Oilers had a slow start last season, but they've picked up points in all three games, earning five out of a possible six points out of the gate. Edmonton kicked off a five-game road trip Tuesday with a 2-0 win against the Rangers, as Stuart Skinner stopped all 30 shots he faced. As Trent Frederic had an even-strength goal midway through the second period, with Adam Henrique adding an empty-net goal, with helpers to Andrew Mangiapane and Connor McDavid.

The Islanders have lost all three games, averaging 2.3 GPG, while allowing 4.3 GPG, with at least four goals allowed in each game. As such, we're going to not only suggest backing the heavy favorite Oilers to get the job done, but we'll take Leon Draisaitl with an anytime goal. He had a goal in each of the first two games before getting blanked in the Rangers game. He should rebound against the leaky D of the Isles. Let's go Over, too.

  • Oilers ML (-170 at Bet365, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings and ESPN Bet Sportsbooks)
  • Over 5.5 Goals (-130 at ESPN Bet Sportsbook)
  • Leon Draisaitl Anytime Goal Scorer (+105 at FanDuel Sportsbook)

Carolina Hurricanes at Anaheim Ducks

The Hurricanes (3-0-0) and the Ducks (2-1-0) meet at Honda Center at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Carolina routed the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, kicking off a six-game road trip with a 5-1 win. The Hurricanes traditionally have a lengthy road trip early in the season, as the North Carolina State Fair takes place near the Lenovo Center. To avoid traffic snarls, the NHL schedules the Canes on the road, freeing up the local roads for the fair.

Carolina doesn't care where it plays, as it is on fire. It has averaged 5.0 GPG in the first three games, while allowing 2.3 GPG. Brandon Bussi made his NHL debut in the win over the Sharks, stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced. He is filling the backup role behind Frederik Andersen with Pyotr Kochetkov on the shelf due to injury.

The Hurricanes had five different goal scorers in the Bay Area, as Sean Walker, William Carrier, Eric Robinson, Shayne Gostisbehere and Jackson Blake notched goals, while a total of 13 players had at least one point, with Logan Stankoven going for two assists as the only multi-point performer.

While Carolina has been hot, it traditionally struggles against Anaheim. The Ducks have won four of the past six meetings since Dec. 6, 2022, and if you bet Anaheim in each of those games, you'd be ahead +1,055 in the six-game span, including the two losses.

For whatever reason, the Ducks just match up well with the Hurricanes, and this season, Anaheim is off to a hot start. The Ducks have won two of three games, including a wild 7-6 OTW in San Jose Saturday, while winning 4-3 in the home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins last time out. Chris Kreider had a pair goal power-play goals, including the game-winner. The Over is 2-1 in three games to date.

Let's back the Ducks catching the goal and a half, while going high on the total.

  • Ducks +1.5 Goals (-155 at BetMGM)
  • Over 6 Goals (+100 at Caesars Sportsbook)
