Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Wednesday's 14-game MLB slate begins at 2:10 PM Eastern time. The two pitchers recommended in this slate come from opposite ends of the price spectrum, but both have thrived recently. Joining them are a group of hitters in position to capitalize on favorable matchups, highlighted by a pair of Cubs.

PITCHER

Alex Cobb, BAL vs. TOR ($30): It's easy to overlook with how poorly the Orioles have played this season, but Cobb has quietly put together a spectacular August. In five starts this month, he's posted a 1.80 ERA over 35 innings despite facing some scary offenses (Yankees twice, Red Sox, Indians and Rays). His 15.6 percent strikeout rate this season limits Cobb's ceiling, but the right-hander's recent form suggests he shouldn't have trouble outperforming his $30 valuation against a middling Blue Jays lineup.

David Price, BOS vs. MIA ($47): Price is worth paying up for in this slate given his recent form and favorable matchup. He's 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA over his past six starts and is capable of racking up hefty strikeout totals with a 24.4 percent strikeout rate this season. Look for him to keep rolling against a Marlins offense that ranks 29th with 3.69 runs per game.

CATCHER

Willson Contreras, CHC vs. NYM ($13): Right-handed hitters have had their way with Mets lefty Jason Vargas this season, producing a .393 wOBA that climbs to .450 outside of Citi Field. With a .361 wOBA against southpaws this season, Contreras is primed to provide excellent value at $13 in this favorable matchup.

FIRST BASE

Matt Davidson, CWS at NYY ($15): In 99 plate appearances against left-handed pitching this season, Davidson has stuffed the stat sheet with a .390 wOBA, five home runs, eight doubles and 13 walks. He bats in the heart of Chicago's order and has more than enough power to make CC Sabathia pay for any mistakes at Yankee Stadium. The veteran lefty has a 4.00 ERA and 4.24 FIP in his past seven starts while the Bronx-based venue ranks sixth in park factor (1.14) and 11th in home run park factor (1.10).

SECOND BASE

Neil Walker, NYY vs. CWS ($15): The switch-hitting Walker has always been better when batting left-handed. He has a .345 career wOBA against righties and a .339 mark facing them at Yankee Stadium this season, compared to a meager .298 career wOBA against lefties. Walker will operate from his preferred side against White Sox righty Reynaldo Lopez, who has allowed 28 earned runs, 10 home runs and 17 walks over 36 innings since the All-Star break, giving Lopez a 7.00 ERA in those seven starts.

THIRD BASE

David Bote, CHC vs. NYM ($17): Given Vargas' aforementioned struggles, it makes sense to stack your lineup with right-handed Cubs sluggers. Bote is another one that's positioned for success, as he's clobbered lefties to the tune of a .428 wOBA through 33 such at-bats in the majors.

SHORTSTOP

Manny Machado, LAD at TEX ($20): Machado has a healthy .383 wOBA against lefties, and that number is primed to climb further against Rangers southpaw Mike Minor. Minor has a 4.40 ERA and 1.40 HR/9, so he'll have a hard time keeping Machado from capitalizing on Globe Life Park in Arlington's league-high 1.36 park factor and 1.29 home run park factor.

OUTFIELD

Michael Conforto, NYM at CHC ($14): While Cubs righty Alec Mills handled the Mets with 5.2 strong innings in his first major-league start, his 4.84 ERA in 124.2 Triple-A innings this season suggests he'll have a hard time repeating that success. Meanwhile, Conforto's been raking since the All-Star break with a .272/.348/.500 line in the second half, and the left-handed slugger's road wOBA against righties is up to .381 despite a slow start to the season.

Nick Castellanos, DET at KC ($18): In 120 at-bats against lefties this season, Castellanos has produced a whopping .460 wOBA. Don't expect him to slow down against Royals left-hander Danny Duffy, who has surrendered a .346 wOBA to batters from the right side and sports a 6.83 home ERA this season.

Nelson Cruz, SEA at SD ($19): Padres lefty Joey Lucchesi has had major problems keeping the ball in the yard at Petco Park, with a HR/9 of 1.76 in 61.1 home innings. Cruz is always a threat to go deep, especially against southpaws. The veteran slugger has 50 home runs off left-handed pitching since the start of the 2015 season and owns a .378 wOBA in that split this year.
