FanDuel MLB: Monday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Monday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Anthony DeSclafani, CIN at SFG ($7,500): DeSclafani has been outstanding this season, and he has scored between 38 and 51 fantasy points over his last six starts. He's a perfect 5-0, and the Giants have been slumping, generating only a .300 wOBA and striking out 20.9 percent of the time over the last seven days, while averaging only 2.8 runs per contest over the last eight games.

CATCHER

Welington Castillo, ARI at MIL ($2,800): We'll pick on Brewers starter Chase Anderson with a couple of right-handed D-Backs, starting with Castillo. Anderson has yielded a .430 wOBA and 12 homers this season to right-handed bats, and a .445 wOBA when facing them at home. Castillo had been slumping badly but broke out of it with a homer Sunday, and he could be in line for more against Anderson, who's surrendered a .416 wOBA and generated a 5.84 ERA over his last three starts.

FIRST BASE

Joey Votto, CIN at SFG ($3,300): On the opposite end of the spectrum is Votto, whose bat has been red-hot. The veteran first baseman has six straight games with double-digit fantasy points, smacking three homers, driving in eight runs and drawing a whopping 10 walks over that span. He has enjoyed some moderate success against Giants starter Jake Peavy as well, with a .300/.300/.500 line over 10 at-bats with a pair of doubles. Peavy has also yielded a .374 wOBA to lefty bats this season, along with a 5.65 xFIP and 37.2 percent hard contact rate. Votto is battering righties to the tune of a .400 wOBA and .221 ISO this season, including a .499 wOBA this month.

SECOND BASE

Jose Altuve, HOU at NYY ($3,600): After a 3-for-5, two-homer performance Sunday that netted an astronomical 54.3 fantasy points, Altuve is now hitting .360/.428/.575 on the season. He draws a matchup with Michael Pineda, who's given up a .345 wOBA and 12 homers on the season to righty bats, including a .359 wOBA and 10 of those homers at Yankee Stadium. Altuve has a .407 wOBA and 158 wRC+ versus right-handed pitching, with those figures rising to .464 and .196, respectively, when facing them on the road.

THIRD BASE

Ryan Schimpf, SD at TOR ($2,200): Schimpf has been on an absolute tear, hitting all nine of his homers this month. He's ripped off double-digit fantasy points in seven of his last 10 games, with five round-trippers over that span. Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez has turned in an excellent season, but he has given up eight of his 10 homers on the season to left-handed hitters, and a .362 wOBA and six of those bombs at Rogers Centre. Schimpf has a .424 wOBA, .410 ISO, 173 wRC+, 39.6 percent hard contact rate and eight of his nine homers against right-handed pitching, and a .517 wOBA overall in July.

SHORTSTOP

Carlos Correa, HOU vs. NYY ($3,300): We'll pick on Pineda again with Correa, who's used the Yankees starter as his personal stat-padder over their previous encounters. Correa is 5-for-6 (.833) with two doubles, two homers and two RBI against Pineda and also boasts a .385 wOBA against right-handed pitching that rises to .393 when facing them on the road. Additionally, 14 of his 15 homers on the season have also come against righties, including eight on the road.

OUTFIELD

Jake Smolinski, OAK at TEX ($2,600): Smolinski's bargain price doesn't reflect his recent success, a six-game stretch where he's managed double-digit fantasy points on four occasions and nine in another. Meanwhile, Rangers starter Martin Perez has given up a .349 wOBA and 11 of his 12 homers on the season to right-handed hitters. He's also been on a serious downhill slide this month, generating an 8.34 ERA and surrendering a .377 wOBA over four starts. Meanwhile, Smolinski has posted a .499 wOBA, .380 ISO and five of his six homers against southpaws, and he has a 42.9 percent hard contact rate against them on the road.

Yasmany Tomas, ARI at MIL ($3,100): We'll get back to picking on Chase Anderson with Tomas, who broke out of a long slump with two home runs Sunday. Considering Anderson's struggles against right-handed bats that were detailed earlier, as well as Tomas' .347 wOBA, .240 ISO and 46.1 percent hard contact rate against righties on the road, the D-Backs slugger brings solid upside at his price.

Kole Calhoun, LAA at KAN ($3,500): I try not to let an opportunity to roster at least one player against Royals starter Ian Kennedy go by the wayside, considering his recent slide and propensity for propping up the opposition's power numbers. Kennedy has given up 26 homers on the season, with over half (14) at the hands of lefty bats. His ERA and wOBA over the last four starts are now at 5.66 and .369, respectively, and he's yielded a .338 wOBA to left-handed hitters with a whopping 48 percent hard contact rate when facing them at Kauffman Stadium. Calhoun also has a .337 wOBA against righties overall, including a .377 wOBA and 43.8 percent hard contact rate when facing them on the road.
