Majors Value Meter: U.S. Open Rankings

Below are RotoWire's rankings for the 121st U.S. Open, which begins Thursday, June 17 on the South Course at historic Torrey Pines Golf Course outside San Diego. 

This list is geared toward winner-take-all leagues and leagues that reward the lowest aggregate score, but it can serve for other formats and DFS players as well.

Torrey Pines is very familiar to the golfers and golf fans alike, as it has been the site of some historic moments and annually hosts the Farmers Insurance Open every January. Both the South and North Courses are in play at that event, but only the South track will be used for the U.S. Open. The course played as a par-72 at 7,765 yards in January. This week, it will be a par-71 at 7,685.

This will be the second major contested at Torrey Pines. In 2008, a noticeably-injured Tiger Woods famously won his third U.S. Open and 14th major championship on the first hole of sudden death against Rocco Mediate – after they completed an 18-hole Monday playoff all even. Woods and Mediate were tied at 1-under after 72 holes on a track that nearly matches this year's par-71/7,643 yards. It was Woods' final major title until winning the 2019 Masters. Woods-Mediate was the last 18-hole playoff ever at the U.S. Open. In 2018, the United States Golf Association instituted a two-hole aggregate playoff to determine the champion.

There will be 156 players in the field with 60 and ties making the cut. There are 155 golfers listed here, with the USGA holding one spot in case someone playing the Palmetto Championship becomes a multiple 2020-21 winner to gain entry. Almost half the field was determined through local and final qualifying around the United States and, in the case of two golfers, Japan. The 10 leading players from the European Qualifying Series not already exempt received a berth, as did the Order of Merit leaders on the Asian, Australasia and Sunshine Tours. There are nine amateurs in the field, denoted with an (a).

The list was compiled before the completion of the Palmetto Championship. Players who were in that field have an asterisk next to their name. Players who were in the field for the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines are denoted with a hashtag next to their name.

FAVORITES

1. Brooks Koepka*
Despite missing the cut at the Palmetto Championship, he has shown that when healthy he is a threat to win any major. He finished second to Phil Mickelson last month at the PGA Championship and has gone win-win-runner-up in his past three U.S. Open appearances, which came in the years 2017-19. He has played Torrey Pines only twice before, missing the cut in 2017 and tying for 41st in 2015. He won in Phoenix earlier this year. He is No. 8 in the world rankings.

2. Jon Rahm
What a week it's been for the No. 3 golfer in the world. A stunning positive COVID-19 test forced his withdrawal from the Memorial before heading into Sunday with a six-stroke lead. He entered a 10-day isolation period, one that would have prevented him from stepping on the Torrey Pines grounds until the day before the tournament started. The only way around it was to test negative twice within 24 hours. Now, that has happened, and Rahm is good to go. His first PGA Tour title came in 2017 at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he was fifth in 2019, runner-up in 2020 and seventh in January. He's also been a top-10 machine in majors -- and everywhere else -- with top-10s already at the Masters and PGA. The only thing is, he's never won a major and never even finished second. His best major finish was a tie for third at the 2019 U.S. Open.

3. Collin Morikawa
His laser-like iron game is capable of deciding a tournament at a track like this. He played the Farmers Insurance Open for the first time in 2020 and tied for 21st before skipping this year's event. He has been playing great in 2021, winning the WGC-Workday event in February and arriving with top-10s in three of his past four starts, including a playoff loss at the Memorial. He missed the cut at Winged Foot last year. He is No. 4 in the OWGR.

4. Dustin Johnson*#
He played the week before the U.S. Open partly because of his partnership with RBC and partly in an effort to find his game, which had been missing for virtually all of 2021. He hasn't played Torrey Pines since a missed cut in 2017 but tied for third in 2011. The 2016 Open champ tied for sixth last year at Winged Foot. He remains No. 1 in the world rankings.

5. Rory McIlroy
He didn't play Torrey Pines for much of his career but took to it quickly.  He debuted with a T5 in 2019, then added a T3 in 2020 and a tie for 16th back in January. He has played only once since breaking a long winless drought at Quail Hollow. That was a tie for 49th at the PGA. The 2011 U.S. Open winner finished top-10 the past two years. He is at No. 10 in the world rankings.

6. Xander Schauffele
The San Diegan inexplicably missed the cut in four of his first five visits to Torrey Pines, but he tied for 25th in 2019 and then, in January, was the runner-up. In the past four U.S. Opens he finished 5-6-3-5. He remains winless since the 2019 Tournament of Champions but is still ranked sixth in the OWGR.

7. Patrick Reed
He was the winner at Torrey Pines in January, and you can see the year-by-year improvement there: 23rd in 2018, 13th in 2019 and sixth in 2020. He has a best of fourth in the U.S. Open in 2018 and tied for 13th last year at Winged Foot. He also was eighth at the Masters in April and then 17th at the PGA. He is ranked ninth in the OWGR.

8. Justin Thomas
He has not been playing at the top of his game since winning THE PLAYERS in March and has not played Torrey Pines since a missed cut in 2015. He has two top-10s in Opens, including last year at Winged Foot. He is ranked second in the OWGR.

9. Bryson DeChambeau
He is the defending U.S. Open champion after a dominating effort at Winged Foot. But he has not done well at Torrey Pines, missing the cut in both previous visits in 2017 and 2018, and hasn't been at his best of late. He won at Bay Hill in March but hasn't had a top-25 in five of his past six starts. Ranked fifth in the OWGR.

10. Tony Finau
He's top-10 almost every year at Torrey Pines and top-10 in most majors. So we better put him in the top-10 this week. He was runner-up at the Farmers event in January, his fourth top-6 there in five years. He was top-10 at the first two majors of 2021 and tied for eighth at last year's U.S. Open. But of course he remains stuck on one career win. Ranked 14th in the OWGR.

11. Will Zalatoris
He was sixth at last year's U.S. Open, then second at the Masters and eighth the PGA. And he was also seventh at Torrey Pines back in January. So 11th might be too low for the golfer ranked 29th in the world.

12. Viktor Hovland
After missing the cut at his Farmers debut in 2019, he tied for second in January. He has two seconds and two thirds already in 2021. He's finished 12th (as an amateur) and 13th in his two U.S. Opens. He was T21 at the Masters in April and T30 at the PGA. He is ranked 13th OWGR.

CONTENDERS

13. Patrick Cantlay
He is coming off a win at the Memorial and, no matter your stance on the Jon Rahm incident, Cantlay played well all week. He's played the Farmers only three times, a bit odd for a Long Beach, Calif., native. He missed the cut twice, lastly in 2019. He's been in five U.S. Opens with two top-25s but no top-10s. He is ranked No. 7 OWGR.

14. Justin Rose#
The 2013 Open winner at Merion. He also won the 2019 Farmers, and he finished eighth in 2018 and fourth in 2017. But he missed the cut in 2020. He has finished top-10 in both majors so far this year. He has five top-10s in 15 Opens, most recently a tie for third in 2019. Ranked 42nd OWGR.

15. Louis Oosthuizen
He was third at last year's U.S. Open and seventh the year before, giving him four top-10s and seven top-25s in 11 U.S. Open starts. He was runner-up in 2015. He tied for 29th at Torrey Pines in January, just his second start there (T41 in 2017). Since the Farmers, he's finished top-20 four times in seven stroke-play starts, including co-runner-up at the PGA. Ranked 18th OWGR.

16. Hideki Matsuyama
He showed the hangover from his Masters win is over, having finished top-25 at the PGA. He was third at the 2019 Farmers but far back the past two years. He's finished in the top-25 in six of his eight U.S. Opens, including shared runner-up behind Koepka in 2017. Ranked 15th OWGR.

17. Jordan Spieth
As always, he is one of the hardest golfers to slot. He's once again Jordan Spieth but … he has missed only one cut in this turnaround year – and it was at Torrey Pines. He's never had much success there, tying for 55th in 2020 and 35th in 2019. He was T19 way back in 2014. Since winning the U.S. Open in 2015, he has not had a top-30 result, missing two of five cuts. Ranked 23rd OWGR.

18. Paul Casey#
He is amid a terrific season, one that saw him win in Dubai, then finish top-five at both THE PLAYERS and PGA. He just missed a top-25 at the Masters. He has finished top-25 the past three years at the U.S. Open but has only one career top-10. He has not played Torrey Pines since a T28 in 2017 after missing the cut there in 2015-16. Ranked 20th OWGR.

19. Marc Leishman
He's had quite a few good results at the Farmers through the years – winning in 2020 with two other runners-up. His good results have been more sporadic of late, though he did just tie for fifth at the Masters. He's been in 10 U.S. Opens with only one top-25. This is one of the bigger battles between course history and current form/Open form. Ranked 43rd OWGR.

20. Webb Simpson
The 2012 U.S. Open winner has made the cut in nine of 10 tries, with five top-25s and three top-10s. He has virtually no history at Torrey Pines, last playing in 2011 (MC). He was T19 in 2009. He was 12th at the Masters in April and then 30th at the PGA. He does not have a podium finish in 2021 and has thus fallen to 12th in the world.

21. Scottie Scheffler
He agonizingly had to withdraw before the 2020 U.S. Open after a positive COVID test. This year, he tied for 18th at the Masters and for eighth at the PGA. He's played the Farmers the past two years and missed the cut both times. He is still looking for his first PGA Tour win and is ranked 17th.

22. Adam Scott#
He's played the Farmers twice, as runner-up in 2019 and T10 in January. He's one of the 20-something guys who were around at the 2008 Open at Torrey, and he tied for 26th. This will be his 20th Open and he's had six top-25s and three top-10s, including a tie for seventh just two years ago. Ranked 41st OWGR.

23. Ryan Palmer
He had not played the Farmers for years until returning four years ago. He's been great there ever since – 2nd in 2018, then 13th, 21st and shared runner-up to Patrick Reed in January. But in eight U.S. Opens he made only two cuts. To further complicate things, he's missed only two cuts in his past 22 starts overall, but both were majors, at the PGA last month and the U.S. Open last year. This is a tough rankings decision pitting course history and current form against major history. Ranked 34th OWGR.

24. Jason Kokrak
He outdueled Jordan Spieth to win at Colonial in his most recent start, his second win this season. He remarkably has gone from a horrible putter to an elite putter in the span of one offseason. He finished top-25 at the Farmers three times from 2016 to 2020, but just missed in January, tying for 29th. It's hard to believe this will be just his fourth career U.S. Open. He tied for 17th last year. Ranked 24th OWGR.

25. Gary Woodland
The 2019 Open champion has played well at Torrey Pines through the years, with five top-20s and two top-10s since 2014. But not the past two years. He had an awful 2020 but has started to turn it around of late, with a pair of recent top-6s and made cuts at both the Masters and PGA. His ranking remains low, at No. 59.

MAKING THE CUT

26. Corey Conners
He has played the Farmers twice, tying for 37th in January and for 29th in 2018. This will be his third U.S. Open – he missed the cut in 2017 and again last year. He's made 20 of his past 21 cuts with 15 top-25s and seven top-10s. Ranked 36th OWGR.

27. Tyrrell Hatton*
This will be his Torrey Pines debut. He missed the cut in last year's U.S. Open but was 21st and sixth in the two preceding years. He won at Abu Dhabi at the beginning of the year. He made the cut at both 2020 majors. Ranked 11th OWGR.

28. Joaquin Niemann
Still only 22, this will be his 10th major. His best was last year's U.S. Open, when he tied for 23rd. He made the cut at both majors so far in 2020. He had made 20 straight cuts before missing at the Memorial. He's played the Farmers just once, tying for 72nd in 2019. Ranked 30th OWGR.

29. Cameron Smith
He has made the cut in four of his five U.S. Opens but has never come close to repeating his debut effort, a tie for fourth in 2015. He was T38 last year. He has a best of ninth at the Farmers in 2019, and was 20th the year before, but missed the cut in January. Ranked 28th OWGR.

30. Abraham Ancer
He missed the cut at the 2019 Farmers, a year after tying for 20th there. He tied for 56th in last year's U.S. Open and for 49th the year before. He's had a great recent run, finishing fifth at the Valspar, second at the Wells Fargo, eighth at the PGA and 14th at the Charles Schwab. Ranked 19th OWGR.

31. Daniel Berger
After debuting at the Farmers with a top-25, he's missed three straight cuts there, lastly in 2019. He's made the cut in five of his six U.S. Opens, but with just one top-25 -- a tie for sixth in 2018. He was top-10 at THE PLAYERS, missed the cut at the Masters and finished far back at the PGA. Ranked 16th OWGR.

32. Max Homa
After missing his first three Farmers cuts, he tied for ninth in 2020 and for 18th in January. He's missed the cut in his past five majors, including both this year and last year in his debut at the U.S. Open. He also missed the cut at THE PLAYERS in March. But he won at Riviera in February and has two recent top-6s, including last time out at the Memorial. Ranked 39th OWGR.

33. Shane Lowry
He hasn't played the Farmers since 2018 but was 13th in 2016 and seventh in 2015. He arrives in excellent form: 8th at THE PLAYERS, 21st at the Masters, fourth at the PGA and, most recently, sixth at the Memorial. He doesn't have a top-25 at the U.S. Open since finishing runner-up in 2015, though he's made every cut. Ranked 40th OWGR.

34. Matt Fitzpatrick*
He's never played Torrey Pines. He's made five of six cuts at the U.S. Open – though the miss was last year. He tied for 12th each of the two previous years. He was top-10 at THE PLAYERS in March, finished T34 at the Masters and tied for 23rd at the PGA. Ranked 21st OWGR.

35. Harris English*
He tied for fourth at the U.S. Open last year at Winged Foot, giving him five made cuts in five tries but never a top-25 before. He was 21st at the Masters in April and also made the cut at the PGA. He won the Tournament of Champions in January, then missed the Farmers cut. He was runner-up at Torrey Pines in 2015 and eighth in 2018. Ranked 26th OWGR.

36. Sungjae Im*
He has top-25s in three of his past five majors, including T22 at the U.S. Open last year and 17th at the PGA last month. He tied for 32nd at the Farmers in January, his best showing in three trips. He'd missed three of his past four cuts heading into the Palmetto, one of them at the Masters. Ranked 25th OWGR.

37. Sam Burns
This will be his U.S. Open debut after WDing from the PGA last month. He had his best Farmers result in four starts in January with a tie for 18th. Since then he has a win (Valspar), runner-up (Byron Nelson) and third (Riviera). Ranked 38th OWGR.

38. Christiaan Bezuidenhout
He was 55th at last year's U.S. Open, part of a run of four straight major cuts made, including the Masters (40th) and PGA (30th) this year. This will be his first look at Torrey Pines. He arrives with a streak of 17 straight worldwide cuts made. Ranked 44th OWGR.

39. Matt Wallace
He's made nine straight cuts in majors, including the two this year and the past two U.S. Opens – finishing 43rd last year and 12th in 2019. This will be his Torrey Pines debut. Ranked 55th OWGR.

40. Ian Poulter*#
He's played the Farmers only twice through years, tying for 19th in 2015 in his most recent visit. He withdrew from the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. He's made the cut in 10 of 15 Opens with five top-25s, but he's MCed in the past two. He tied for third at Colonial before teeing it up at the Palmetto. Ranked 57th OWGR.

41. Phil Mickelson#
Can he do it again? No. Well, probably not. But there's obviously a lot to be said for experience in majors, and he should be able to make the cut, perhaps more. We all know he's been U.S. Open runner-up six times. He's played the Farmers an amazing 31 times, winning three of them, though lastly in 2001. He tied for 53rd in January. He missed the cut at Colonial in his lone start after winning the PGA. Ranked 31st OWGR.

42. Lee Westwood#
Not that it matters much, but he finished third at Torrey Pines in 2008, matching his best Open result ever (also 2011). This will be his 20th Open. He's had five top-10s and 10 top-25s, including a tie for 13th last year. Since finishing second at THE PLAYERS, he missed the cut at the Masters and finished far back at the PGA. He last played the Farmers in 2014, tying for 47th. Ranked 27th OWGR.

43. Billy Horschel
He's made the cut in seven of his 11 Farmers starts, with two top-10s, lastly in 2019. He missed the cut in January. Since winning the Match Play, he's made the cut at the Masters and finished top-25 at the PGA. He's made the cut in six of eight U.S. Opens, including the past two. Ranked 22nd OWGR.

44. Tommy Fleetwood*
This will be his first tournament at Torrey Pines. He finished fourth and second at the U.S. Open in 2017-18, but T65-MC the past two years. He made the cut at the Masters but missed at THE PLAYERS and PGA. Ranked 32nd OWGR.

45. Robert MacIntyre
This will be the 24-year-old's second U.S. Open and his first look at Torrey Pines. He tied for 56th last year at Winged Foot. He tied for 12th at the Masters in April and also made the cut at the PGA. He's missed only one cut in 12 worldwide starts in 2021, and that came at THE PLAYERS. Ranked 47th OWGR.

46. Brian Harman
He's played in the Farmers seven times, lastly in 2019, and he's missed his past two cuts. He was tied for ninth in 2017. He's been in five U.S. Opens and made three cuts, including last year. His lone top-25 was a runner-up in 2017. He's missed only one cut in 2021, at the PGA, then followed that up with a top-10 at Colonial. Ranked 46th OWGR.

47. Garrick Higgo*
The 22-year-old South African who has won three European Tour events since September is set for his second career major. He made the cut at the PGA in his first foray to the States. He was playing in the Palmetto Championship. Ranked 54th OWGR.

48. Charley Hoffman
The San Diego native has played the Farmers 24 times, but with only 13 made cuts. He withdrew in January and tied for ninth in 2020. This will be his eighth U.S. Open and first since 2018, when he tied for 20th. He was solo eighth in 2017. He's finished top-25 in nine of the 12 tournaments he's completed in 2021 (two WDs, one MC). Ranked 58th OWGR.

49. Charl Schwartzel
This is the first qualifier on our list, as he made it through at the big one, Brookside in Columbus, Ohio. He played the Farmers for only the second time in January and he tied for 18th. This will be his 13th U.S. Open and he's made eight cuts, but also missed his past two in 2017-18. He just missed a top-25 at the Masters and MCed at the PGA. Ranked 110th OWGR.

50. Kevin Streelman#
January marked his 11th Farmers start and he tied for 37th for his sixth made cut. He finished third in 2016. This will be his eighth U.S. Open and he's made four cuts, missing last year. He didn't qualify for the Masters but tied for eighth at the PGA and followed that up with top-20s at the Charles Schwab and the Memorial. Ranked 53rd OWGR.

51. Branden Grace
He finished fourth at the Memorial a couple of weeks ago, then flew to Florida and qualified for the Open there. He missed the cut in his lone Farmers in 2019. This will be his ninth U.S. Open. He has two top-10s but missed the cut in his past two. He won the oppo event at Puerto Rico earlier this year. Now ranked 71st OWGR.

52. Brendon Todd
He last played the Farmers in 2014, tying for 37th. This will be his fifth U.S. Open; he tied for 23rd last year. He's missed only two cuts in 13 starts in 2021 with four top-25s, including a recent top-10 at Colonial. Has slipped to 61st OWGR.

53. Stewart Cink#
He's played the Farmers 17 times and made 11 cuts, including his last visit in 2020. He tied for 14th at the 2008 Open. This will be his 21st Open; he's made 14 cuts with seven top-25s. He won twice on Tour this season and is ranked 45th OWGR.

54. Brendan Steele
The Southern California native came through the big Columbus, Ohio, qualifier. He's played the Farmers 10 times and made seven cuts. This will be only his fifth U.S. Open. He's made three cuts with two top-25s but hasn't played since 2018. He has not missed a cut in 12 starts in 2021 and is ranked 80th OWGR.

55. Bernd Wiesberger
The Austrian has made the cut in three straight U.S. Opens after missing in his first three. He tied for 43rd last year. He made the cut at the Masters but missed at the PGA. He recently won a European tour event in Denmark to climb to 52nd in the world rankings. This will be his Torrey Pines debut.

56. Russell Henley
He's been in seven U.S. Open and he's made five cuts, including a top-25 in his last start in 2018. He has not played the Farmers since missing the cut in 2014. He didn't qualify for the Masters but made the cut at the PGA. Ranked 63rd OWGR.

57. Lanto Griffin
He has played the Farmers three times, finishing tied for seventh in January, missing the cut in 2020 and tying for 12th in 2018. This will be his third U.S. Open; he made the cut last year. He has missed four of his past five cuts, including the Masters and PGA, to fall to 69th in the world rankings.

58. Carlos Ortiz
He's played the Farmers five times and tied for 29th in January. This will be his third U.S. Open. He made the cut in his most recent start in 2019. He missed the cut at the Masters, made it at the PGA and is coming off a top-20 at the Memorial. Ranked 51st OWGR.

59. Adam Hadwin
He's made five of his six cuts at the Farmers, including a tie for 18th in January. Thanks making it through the Columbus, Ohio, qualifier at Brookside, this will be his sixth Open, and he's made three cuts. He made the cut at the PGA last month and is ranked 99th OWGR.

60. Wilco Nienaber*
The 21-year-old South African qualified for his first major as the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit leader. He won his first tournament last month. The Palmetto Championship was his first start in the States. He's ranked 143rd in the world.

BORDERLINE

61. Erik van Rooyen*
This will be his third U.S. Open and he's made both cuts, including top-25 last year. He made the Open field via the Columbus, Ohio, qualifier. He played the Farmers for the first time in January and missed the cut. He had missed four straight cuts, including the PGA, heading into the Palmetto. Ranked 88th OWGR.

62. Sebastian Munoz
He's made the cut in two of his three starts at the Farmers. He's made the cut in one of his two U.S. Opens (T59 last year). He made the cut at the Masters in April but missed at the PGA and is ranked 64th OWGR.

63. Matt Jones
The recent Honda Classic winner finished top-30 at both the Masters and the PGA and is now 60th in the world rankings. He's played the Farmers 11 times and made nine cuts, including a T13 in 2019. But interestingly, he has yet to make a cut in five U.S. Opens, including the past three years.

64. Henrik Stenson#
This will be the fifth and final U.S. Open he's exempted into for winning the 2016 Open Championship. He's played in 14 overall, making nine cuts, with six top-25s and four top-10s. He missed the cut last year but tied for ninth the year before. He's fallen to 145th in the world but made the cut at both the Masters and PGA. He has not played Torrey Pines since missing the cut at the 2008 Open.

65. Sergio Garcia#
Now ranked 49th in the world, he tied for 18th at the 2008 Open. That's the good news. That was his last start at Torrey Pines. His recent record in majors is horrible. In 15 majors since winning the 2017 Masters, he's missed 11 cuts, including his past four, which means the Masters and PGA this year. Ranked 49th OWGR.

66. Si Woo Kim
This will be the 25-year-old's 19th career major. And it has not been a great run. He's made only seven cuts, including one out of four at the U.S. Open. And that was his first one in 2017. He was 12th at the Masters in April but missed the cut at the PGA. He also missed the cut at the Farmers in January but had made the cut three times previously in four visits (also a WD). Ranked 48th OWGR.

67. Francesco Molinari
He played his fifth Farmers in January and tied for 10th. He's played in 10 U.S. Opens with six made cuts, including three top-25s, two of them in 2018-19. He didn't play last year. He made the cut at the Masters, didn't qualify for the PGA and is now ranked 167th in the world.

68. Thomas Detry
The 28-year-old Belgian made the field for his second U.S. Open via the European Tour qualifier. He made the cut last year. He missed the cut at the PGA last month. He tied for 28th at the WGC-Workday earlier this year and was runner-up in his past start at the Porsche European Open. Ranked 90th OWGR.
 
69. Rafa Cabrera Bello*
He made it through the Columbus, Ohio, qualifier to reach his eighth U.S. Open. He's made six cuts with one top-25. He has struggled this year, falling to 133rd in the world rankings, but made three straight cuts before missing at the Palmetto Championship, including a top-25 at the Byron Nelson. This will be his first start at Torrey Pines.

70. Bubba Watson#
This will be his 15th U.S. Open and he's made a mere six cuts with two top-25s. He tied for 31st last year. He's played the Farmers 10 times and made eight cuts, including a tie for sixth just last year. He made the cut at both majors this year, just missing a top-25 at Augusta. Now ranked 62nd OWGR.

71. Martin Laird*
The 38-year-old Scotsman won the Shriners back in the fall, and he subsequently made the cut at THE PLAYERS, the Masters and the PGA, finishing top-25 at the Ocean Course. But he still had to go through the tough Columbus, Ohio, qualifier, and he obviously succeeded against a strong field. He's made the cut in nine of 13 trips to the Farmers but missed in January. He last played the Farmers in 2011 (missed cut). This will be his 10th U.S. Open and he's made five cuts but missed the past two years. He was 12th at the Masters, missed the cut at the PGA and is ranked 37th in the world.

74. Zach Johnson#
He's another guy who doesn't play the Farmers, last coming to Torrey Pines for the 2008 U.S. Open (missed cut). He's made the cut in 12 of his 17 Opens. Only three were top-25s, but one was last year's tie for eighth (which got him into this year's field without qualifying). He missed the cut at both the Masters and PGA, part of a stretch of four MCs in his past seven starts. He's ranked 124th OWGR.

75. Chan Kim
The American who was born in South Korea, grew up in Hawaii and attended Arizona State made it through the California qualifier for his fourth U.S. Open. He's yet to make a cut. He plays on the Japan Tour and this will be his first trip to Torrey Pines. He tied for 35th at the WGC-Workday earlier this year and then had a top-25 at the PGA (T23). Now ranked 82nd OWGR.
